Pigeon Key Florida
Pigeon key Florida – A lonely island in the middle of the Florida straits, an archipelago off Marathon, Pigeon Key is a ghostly vestige from a time when the railroad helped forge south Florida. In its early days an important link in Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad to Key West, it became home to hundreds of conscripted laborers who built the bridge that spans from mainland to island. When Flagler’s project was completed, many workers stayed on the island as caretakers of the railroad – a job that gave them free housing in exchange for security and upkeep.
Pigeon Key is a privilage few will ever get to experience – but if you’re lucky enough to find yourself in that part of the world, be sure to stop by.
You can even stay overnight in one of their rustic rooms!
