Mosquito Project Florida keys – RELEASE PHASE complete

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) and Oxitec say they have finished another phase of their project to evaluate the use of Oxitec mosquitoes in controlling invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The team has successfully concluded active release stage, which involves releasing millions into local environments where it is hoped this will reduce transmission rates for diseases like dengue fever by up-to 90%. All boxes containing these insects are now being removed from FKMCDSites–a process expected complete within weeks if all goes well; monitoring efforts then continue until next February when results come out
